                                    The Hummingbird Feeder

                                    My hummingbird feeder hanging proudly!
There have been these hummingbird feeders at Pier 1 (where I work) that I have been waiting for to go on sale. They were originally $14.98. Recently, they went on sale for $11.98 but I still waited. About 2 weeks ago, they went on sale again for $7.48, so I put one, of the three left, aside on hold. I was waiting for payday to buy it as well as two seat cushions. Then, Frank’s truck broke down and his new job was holding his first check. Back at Pier One, someone, eventually, put my items back on the shelf. I took them out again hoping, with my next check, I could buy them.

All of the associates at Pier One, were given three $5.00 coupons. I thought, “Perfect! I’ll buy my stuff with that!” When the sales lead, Anderson, tried to ring it up, though, the system wouldn’t apply the coupons. So, I said that I would just wait. I come to find out an associate can only buy things UP to $5.00 or $10.00 or $15.00. The employee discount can’t be used and the difference can’t be paid either. “Great”, I thought. Now, I had to figure out how to get the hummingbird feeder ($7.48) and something else that would equal $10.00 or $15.00 dollars. I hate having to buy stuff just because of the coupon!

I marked my feeder, “HOLD UNTIL 8/1” (that’s when the coupon expired.) When I went in to work on Sunday night, the feeder was gone! I couldn’t find it anywhere in the store! I asked a fellow employee, Kerri Anne, if she put it in the back. She didn’t. I thought that maybe Tom, the manager, moved it? He did.

I was mad all night! I had to talk to God and vent and try to just let it go. I mean, really. It’s a hummingbird feeder. So, I have one more day to figure out how to use these coupons. I remembered an LED candle I had put on hold, then put back. I went in on Monday and the candle was still on the shelf. $9.98 plus 3 scent pods at $1.50 each. $15.00. Great.

During the day, I had a customer apply for a Pier One Rewards card. Whenever a customer applies for a Pier One Rewards card, the cashier at the moment (in this case: ME) gets a chance to win some Pier One “bucks”. I told Tom, the manager, and he put a coin in the drawing for my chance to win. Later, as I was doing some markdowns, I was looking for an item in the clearance candle section. As I look up, THERE IS THE HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER! At that moment, Tom comes out and says, “Congratulations, Christina! You won the BINGO! Here’s $5.00 Pier 1 bucks!” Ha ha ha, God, You make me laugh! So, I said, “Look what I found!” and showed him the hummingbird feeder. He laughed. “Don’t worry”, I said, “I’m buying it today.”

I was laughing to myself. God is so great! I shared this with Kerri Anne and she agreed. Now, when I went to buy everything: the LED candle, the three different scent pods, and the hummingbird feeder, I ended paying, after all the discounts, coupons, and bingo money, $1.00… FOR EVERYTHING!! God’s plan was so much better than mine with all my figuring and calculations! Ha ha ha ha!!!
